I went to see Rajneeti expecting to see Sonia Gandhi.. but what I saw was a brilliantly made Hindi film. Prakash Jha has done a fantastic job when he shows the cut throat politics in India. This film has all the drama, the masala, the twists and the keeps you thinking what can come next.
The plot can be compared to the Mahabharata where both Prithviraj (Arjun Rampal ) and Veerandra Prathap (Manoj Bajpai) claim to be the inheritor of the party from their parents. Along the same lines Ajay Devgan plays the role of Karn (the long lost son of Kunti). The whole movie revolves around the war between the brothers which is similar to the Pandavas and Kauravas. Nana Patekar plays the shrewd Mama who knows all and is well versed with the political tactics. Finally, Samar (Ranbir Kapoor) is the character who does not want to enter politics unlike his brother Prithvi but is thrust in the middle when his father is assassinated.
The whole movie shows different characters who are just hungry for power and are willing to go to any extent to get it. The usual corruption to buy and sell election seats, the collection of party funds from wealthy business people in return for favors, the sexual favors for getting a party ticket and the give and take of crores just for the give and take of support for coalition etc is captured very realistically. Every time there seems to be some predictability in the movie the story suddenly changes. The twists and turns blow you away.
As like other Bollywood movies the female characters in the movie do not have much role until at the end Katrina Kaif becomes the party leader. Indu (Katrina Kaif) is the daughter of a successful businessman who loves Samar. When Prithvi starts his own party Samar uses her because to marry her means her father can fund the party for the election. This trade off ends with Indu marrying Samar's elder brother Prithvi against her wishes. Samar on the other hand has an girlfriend in America who is brought to ward off any media scandals regarding Indu and Samar.

Now coming to the real reason why the masses will go to watch the movie. The promos show Katrina Kaif just like Sonia Gandhi. So how close is the story and characters to the Congress party. Well there are similarities and there are some major differences. If Samar is Rajiv Gandhi then his wife needs to be Sonia which does not happen cause Kartina is his brothers wife. Also his girlfriend is killed in a blast along with Prithvi. Again though the party is a family affair they inherit it from their father and not mother like Indira Gandhi. Finally at the very end Samar returns to America and Indu is not an Italian.
Giving credit for the awesome movie to Prakash Jha and the really good acting by Manoj Bajpai and Nana Patekar. Katrina Kaif plays a character like Sonia Gandhi at the very end and I must say that suits her very very well. The same look and the similar hindi accent. However, during the rest of the movie her acting sucks! Anyway since her prettiness makes up for it most people can just ignore. Finally Ranbir Kapoor as Samar Pratap and younger brother of Prithvi does justice to his role. He is the think tank of the new generation with a sole aim to take revenge for his fathers death.
All in all the movie is a full speed roller coaster ride and one that does keep you hooked.
